Relationships start easy enough but then life starts kicking you in the ass and your relationship starts to get harder and need more work. Couples are forced to make a decision. Continue the relationship as is, or make a change.

Once you are in a long-term relationship and have kids the choice feels overwhelming and the one question you need to answer is scary as hell.

What happens if nothing changes?

When you look at your current relationship and your feelings towards your partner, this is the only question you need to ask. It’s also the scariest question you will ever ask yourself and why most people don’t ask it.

Your answer may be confronting and upsetting BUT it is also the single most effective motivator for change.

Why ask yourself “What happens if nothing changes?”

It doesn’t matter whether the issue is sexual or general relationship concerns. The question and the reasons why are the same.

Life means living. If you are plodding through your life and your relationship the truth is you aren’t living. To live life you need to be your true self and experience what life has to offer by being happy and present.

Your children’s socio-emotional health starts developing from the moment they are born. They absorb all the relationships and interactions around them and feed off those interactions and emotions to form their foundations. YOU are their primary development feeder. If you are in an unhealthy or disconnected relationship, your baby feels it and it’s forming the basis of their future self and relationship interactions.

66% of mothers are unsatisfied with their sex life. Mothers are not sexually satisfied reducing their relationship satisfaction. Parents ignore relationship problems when their kids are young but those problems can’t be masked once kids start to move out of home. The average age when couples are divorcing has been rising steadily since the 1980s as has the rate of divorce amongst couples married for 20+ years. Parents are running through the motions to survive rather than making changes to thrive.

How to ask the question and the next steps

Here’s your strategy for successfully asking yourself the question positively.

Make yourself comfortable, sit down with a pen and paper and ask yourself “What happens if nothing changes?” Write down your answer in as much detail as possible.

Read your answer through 3 times.

Ask yourself if you can live with your answer long-term? Will you be living happy and fulfilled?

If the answer is no, then ask yourself what you need to change to flip your answer on its head to what you want your future life to look like.

Break your changes down into small achievable actions, or contact me so we can work through your solution.

Next you need to have a conversation with your partner about how you are feeling. You can show them your answers if it helps BUT first ask them the same question, “What happens if nothing changes?” Again, the answer may be confronting. The first step of change is the hardest and you need to find that motivator for the first action.

If you are ready to start living life instead of surviving life, it’s time to ask yourself the hard question. You are not alone you have my support and encouragement to find your fulfilment, whatever that may be.

Contact me directly for more advice.

Sexual desire can nose dive after kids leaving a fire for sex after birth without a spark.

Parents in relationships glum comments:

“I don’t love my husband anymore”

“My husband is like a child”

“I’d rather masturbate than have sex with my partner”

“I don’t feel like we have anything in common anymore”

Relatable? You are not alone and there is nothing wrong with you!

“It won’t happen to us we’re different”. That classic line that expectant couples tell themselves and existing parents snigger at thinking “just you wait”.

Couples don’t expect their feelings or thoughts about each other to change when a child is born. But just as individuals struggle with their self-identity as a mother or father, couples struggle to maintain their relationship identity and find time to prioritise their relationship.

What this means for your sexual relationship is, you can expect intimacy to take one of three routes after birth.

Intimacy and emotional connection decrease as a result of sexual problems and lifestyle struggles,

Sex is used as a tool to remain connected amid change, or

New ways are found to express intimacy, like an increase in hugging and acts of kindness.

Which one did your relationship take?

Research shows that couples tend to fall into gender stereotypical roles after becoming parents. Even the most equal couples, who look at their parents and say “we won’t be like that”, fall into stereotypical behaviours. Why? Because we have been taught our “social role” since the day we were born. Dads are the breadwinners whilst mums are responsible for childrearing and the household.

Gender equality has been a changing landscape since the 1960s. Shifting priorities from running a clean, calm adult household to devoting time to raising children means mothers have less time than before because children take more effort than a house. Add in paid work outside the home for mums, and dads aren’t the only breadwinners anymore. Only recently, the world started changing its view on parental leave policies meaning we can finally alter views on childrearing responsibility. Until then, mums remain exhausted, overwhelmed and overworked.

Does this happen in your house?

You ask your partner to take out the rubbish.

You ask them a further 4 times, getting angrier and now you’re “nagging”.

After a couple of hours and multiple asks, you stomp out of the house to take the rubbish yourself.

The kids are in bed and your partner approaches you for sex.

You see red and tell them it’s not happening tonight and they huff off complaining about you always rejecting them.

Here is how to keep your relationship and sexual desire intact whilst parenting

Maintain your couple identity

What defined you as a couple before kids and brought you joy? Maybe you were the singing couple, the adventure couple, the reading couple or the travelling couple.

Don’t stop doing what made you a couple. Yes, for a while you might have to modify, but don’t stop completely. It can be harder to find it again later.

Share the workload

Remember your equals and it takes two to make a baby (not one and a sprinkle). Share your load by making a list of all the daily/weekly chores and things that create stress and fatigue. Then split them up equally (for my organiser friends this will be fun)! Just because mum may be a ‘stay-at-home-mum’ doesn’t mean she needs to do all the dinner cooking.

Understand each other’s sexual desire

Desire discrepancy in relationships is normal because our desire make-up is individual. Discuss your ideal sex frequency together and find a mutually agreed middle ground (it might be once a week for instance). Then book in your “sex day”. Remember sex is not intercourse! There are lots of intimate acts that don’t involve penetration so this should be part of your discussion.

Discuss what you need to boost your desire

No one wants to parent their partner and no one wants to be treated as a child. 71% of parents think differently about their partner after birth and the majority who negatively see their partner say they are “like a child”. Keep a check on this and call it out when it happens. Insider tip: the more equal the workload (above), the more this naturally won’t happen.

Understand what each other’s biggest barrier is. Is it exhaustion, insecure self-image or financial stress? Overcoming this barrier is key.
Painful sex after birth has many causes, and having a cesarean section doesn’t mean you’ll be pain-free. Painful sex shouldn’t be long term, so if it is we need to talk.

I’ve never understood the expression “it’s just like riding a bicycle”. I’ve actually not ridden a bike for a long time and it wasn’t easy to start riding again! The same can be said for postpartum sex. Mums can stop for weeks, months or years after birth, and it can be painful to restart. “It feels like the first time”, but over time the riding rhythm returns.

Postpartum dyspareunia exists and here’s what you need to tell your pregnant friends!

Dyspareunia means persistent or recurrent genital pain that occurs just before, during or after intercourse. 10-28% of heterosexual women are likely to experience it in their lifetime. In the US, it’s estimated 50-60% of women have dyspareunia 6 to 7 weeks postpartum, and 33% and 17% still report pain during intercourse three and six months after delivery, respectively. Another study found the overall prevalence of postpartum dyspareunia is 35%, with 43% of mums experiencing dyspareunia within 2-6 months postpartum.

Why is sex after birth painful?

Pelvic floor changes

The pelvic floor muscle is under strain during pregnancy and weakens. During vaginal birth, the muscles and ligaments can be pulled and stretched even more, and they need time and exercise to recover and rebuild their strength. Until then, penetrative sex can feel like pushing on a pulled hammy. We also don’t want to overwork the pelvic floor and make it too tight because that can also cause painful sex.

Vaginal Dryness

Due to lower levels of oestrogen, as your hormones rebalance, your vagina can be dryer than usual. This is particularly prevalent for breastfeeding mamas whose levels of oestrogen are even lower.

Scar tissue or tightness

If during a vaginal delivery you have torn or had an episiotomy, the skin and tissue around the perineum or vulva (some women tear upwards or sideways) need nurturing to heal and regain their elasticity. The vagina itself can also feel tight.

A wider and looser vagina

As the uterus shrinks back to its pre-baby size, so does the vagina. Yet it can feel “open and loose” for a while. Your vagina may also not return to its pre-baby shape and this change in size or shape can cause different sensations to what you experienced before.

General soreness

Your genitalia can be sore for many weeks after birth as the whole area heals and returns to a pre-baby state (or close to).

Prolapse

Symptoms of prolapse cannot only be embarrassing (cue incontinence) but they can also be uncomfortable (“feels like an egg falling out my vagina”). Penetrating a vagina that already feels full can be painful.

Here at Authentic Awareness, it’s all about pleasure, fun and connection! Painful and uncomfortable sex block our exposure to pleasure and connection because we are so busy worrying about how things feel so it’s important to stop the pain to prevent long term issues.

Here are 3 ways to relieve painful sex and make sex pleasurable:

Lube Up

I cannot reiterate the importance of lubricant enough for anyone BUT, particularly for new mums. Lubricant is important for preventing the labia from being pulled into the vagina on penetration and reducing pain and discomfort internally during intercourse by decreasing dry friction. My new go-to is Lucy Lube. It’s the thickest water-based lubricant I have discovered to date and a thicker longer-lasting consistency is good for…well…everyone!

Finesse your Foreplay

Slow and steady foreplay is essential to make sure you are aroused. “Doing it to stop someone bugging you” isn’t going to get you anywhere because:

it’s not enjoyable

you aren’t emotionally connecting to your partner

arousal produces natural lubricant and elongates the vaginal canal which provides more space for a penetrating object and reduces pain.

Spend time enjoying sex (it’s not just about intercourse). Get to know your partner and get to know yourself again and what you like.

Relaxation Breathing

When it’s time for penetration use your relaxation breathing. Take a deep breath in and on exhalation consciously relax your vagina. It helps to slowly relax and open up to a new sexual activity or penetrative depth. You don’t need to swallow the whole cucumber in one go, suck it up in bite-size pieces!

Do you believe that everything happens for a reason which is bigger than anyone could explain?

Yes? Not surprising. I mean it is what we are all taught from a very young age. Many (if not all) cultures and religions tells us in some form that fate, karma or destiny exist and that is the reason why we are here. It’s the reason why we tell ourselves things happen the way they do, especially in bad situations. Are you right? Who knows!

But what happens when cracks appear in a relationship or sexual problems and issues start to arise? Is that destiny, possibly a sign to end the relationship, or is it a speed hump to be flown over together, to grow stronger together?

If you think you are never going to having sexual problems in your relationship, then I hate to tell you but chances are against you! You must be in the early months of a new relationship, congratulations! Even 12 months after you start a new relationship sexual satisfaction can begin to decline. Your feelings and behaviours during these challenging times are formed by your belief in either growth or destiny.

Sexual growth believers hold the view that continuous effort, change and adaptability are needed to maintain sexual satisfaction. They are motivated and see challenges as an opportunity to become stronger and develop. During conflicts they are more successful at maintaining positive emotions, believe their partner can change and remain committed to the relationship overall.

Sexual destiny believers hold the view that successful relationships require natural sexual compatibility with a partner. They are sensitive to compatibility threats and react negatively in conflict. Relationship trouble is a sign their partner isn’t “the one” and they are more likely to end a relationship and continue searching for “their soul mate”.

You can see the problem right? Sexual health issues are likely to arise at some point in relationships and where growth believers overcome adversity and experience sexual and relationship satisfaction, our fairytale destiny believers become dissatisfied sexually and with their overall relationship.

The current research also looked at new parenthood growth and destiny beliefs and the results support previous researchindicating the mothers sexual satisfaction is key to both partners satisfaction. “When new mothers and new fathers endorsed higher sexual growth beliefs, both partners reported higher sexual and relationship satisfaction, whereas when new mothers endorsed higher sexual destiny beliefs, both the new mothers and their partners reported lower relationship satisfaction”.

Experiencing sexual problems?

Have a chat with your partner. Do you believe in growth, destiny or both? It’s possible to believe both. For example, you might believe in destiny bringing you and your partner together, but believe that your relationship has lasted because of growth behaviours.

If you are sexually dissatisfied you are more likely to experience depression and anxiety feelings and behaviours such as shame and embarrassment. Focus on adapting and finding solutions to increase your sexual satisfaction to subsequently reduce your negative feelings and behaviours.

Go back to basics. When you ask older couples what has led to their successful relationship, often “friendship” is highly regarded. If you think about arranged marriages many have been successful because they say they “grew” to love and respect their partner. What is the basis of your relationship and what initially brought you closer together?

When it comes to sex and sexual problems this is a great opportunity to become stronger as a couple. There are a number of alternative sex activities or acts that can be modified if you are willing to explore the options.

We’ve all seen the Instagram photos: “I breastfeed because he can’t, I sleep because she can’t”. No matter whether you are in the same life situation or not I’m sure there’s been a point where resentment looms like a dark cloud over your relationship. The world of motherhood is filled with resentment towards a partner, often because as much as the partner tries to be an equal parent often (not always) they fall short and are Assistant Mumager.

Personally, for me motherhood has definitely brought the greatest moments of resentment. I’ve watched my husband sleeping peacefully while I breastfed and thought about punching him in the face just because. “Mummy!” is called first by my kids because they know I understand their routines and will get what they need.

Like all dark clouds they carry negative associations. In this case resentment and insecurity can negatively impact sexual satisfaction. There’s nothing worse than staring at someone with bitterness lurching towards you for intimacy. Ummm…no thanks!

Women in relationships need to feel safe and secure with the person to allow them to open up to pleasure and satisfaction. This sense of security and safety comes from our attachment style to our partner. There are 4 main types of attachment: Secure, Avoidant, Fearful-Avoidant and Anxious. The ideal is to be in a securely attached relationship, where the ability to trust, love, accept intimacy and accept the need for time apart are apparent. Insecure attachment styles like: Anxious attachment, which is run by a fear of abandonment, Avoidant attachment, run by fear of intimacy, and Fearful-Avoidant attachment which is a combination of both, where a person craves affection but also avoids intimacy, can lend to relationship problems.

Coupled with the ability to self-differentiate and balance autonomy and intimacy, sexual pleasure can either skyrocket or plummet. Those who struggle with this balance often become dependent on their partner. Link this to an insecure attachment style and after years of thinking, feeling and doing for their partner the resentment cloud looms large.

Sexual pleasure comes from the ability to let go and enjoy the moment, which requires an acceptance of love and trust in self and a partner.

No matter whether you are good at differentiation or the attachment style you use, the advice is the same.

For sexual satisfaction you NEED to be a confident communicator.

Use “I” statements “I want”, “I need”, “I feel” to express yourself and avoid defensive conversations.

Name emotions and your attachment style.

Actively listen to each other. Stop seeking validation from the world asking on social media “what men think”, only to find out the majority think the same thing your partner told you. LISTEN to the person who actually matters, the one in the relationship with you!

Like all dark clouds they have a silver lining. Recognise what the cloud is filled with, let communication rain to wash away the negative, and sexual satisfaction will sprout.

There is an important moment after sex that is perfect for connection and intimacy. Added bonus for those who have trouble relaxing or have low libido…you’ve already had sex so relax because it’s not a precursor!

Answer this: How do you feel immediately after sex?

Happy, relaxed, fulfilled, sad, disappointed, angry. Wait, what…they aren’t all happy feelings!? No they aren’t.

Did you know there is such a thing as Post-Coital Dysphoria (PCD) or “post-sex blues”? PCD includes feelings tearful, a sense of melancholy or depression, anxiety, agitation, or aggression. 46% of women have experienced PCD in their lifetime compared to 41% of men, and 61% of women with postnatal depression report experiencing PCD. There is a strong relationship between previous child or adult abuse and PCD but only a weak link between sexual functioning and PCD, so it can affect anyone. It’s also not something that regularly affects a person, many people will experience it only some of the time.

No one wants to feel negative after sex. You’ve just experienced orgasm or pleasure or both!

There is a period of time at the end of the sexual response cycle known as the resolution phase. The body returns to its normal state and a person can’t become sexually aroused no matter the stimuli. This phase, often ignored, is actually a perfect time to connect and bond with your partner.

Whether you experience PCD or just want to increase your connection, this is the exact moment you can use and here’s where to start:

Cuddling releases oxytocin, which triggers connection and bond. Just like cuddling your kids it has the same effect when cuddling a partner. If you cuddle and remain silent you’ll notice your breath syncs as you connect.

De-briefing or general talking can boost your mood or bond. Ask for what you need after sex to make sure your needs are met. If a need hasn’t been met during the session and you were nervous to raise it at the time, do it now. Try saying “we did x this time and it was fine/a bit painful, I’d like to try it again, but next time let’s try…”

If you feel negative after sex, what is bringing on the negative feelings? Is there underlying trauma that is affecting you? Sexual abuse as an adult or child and postnatal depression can have significant effects on your sexual functioning and emotions. If so, what can you do for yourself to fulfill your needs?

If you feel really strongly about showering after sex (perhaps it’s been a big sweaty session), try showering together. You can still bond in the shower through touch, hugging and talking.

So next time you go to run off after sex and shower or do chores, stop, relax and think about your emotional connection. Perhaps it needs a few more minutes…after all 5 minutes longer won’t hurt.

Join the Mama’s Sensual Safari and be guided by a Sex Therapist from zero intimate connection to a fulfilling partner connection “to infinity and beyond”!

Ladies, if you masturbate you are a higher quality partner option!

This one line goes against everything that school sex education programs teach, right? I mean, men are taught to experience self-pleasure but women are taught in school (via complete topic silence) and socially that sexual pleasure should only be derived from a partner within a committed romantic relationship.

Why are you higher quality? Your masturbation motive is more pleasure and intimacy-focused meaning you know what you like and you know how to feel more engaged with your partner (and boost your lingering libido!). Additional reasons include stress/anxiety relief, to heighten arousal, fun, improve self-esteem, sexual release, reduce pain, energy boost. Often people fantasise during self-pleasure and around 66% of people’s fantasies are about their partner, which improves intimacy, connection, relationship and sexual satisfaction.

Masturbation is great for learning about your body, pleasure preferences and positively influencing self-image, body image, and sexual empowerment. Masturbating also releases hormones in the brain promoting positive feelings, emotions and sensations. The release of these hormones improves the immune system, reduces pain, stress and anxiety, improves focus and concentration and heightens self-esteem.

Despite all these benefits and being a “higher quality partner”, there are specific issues reported with female masturbation within relationships we need to resolve:

Issue 1: Female orgasm and pleasure is seen as their male partner’s responsibility. Women aren’t masturbating within relationships because their orgasm should be provided by their partner (which may or may not actually be occurring). There is also a sense of “de-masculinising” their man if orgasm is self-achieved. For those that do then secretly masturbate they feel guilt and shame when they discover through self-pleasure that they can actually achieve these things and sometimes it is better than with their partner.

Resolution: Take control and ownership of your pleasure and orgasms! Orgasm equality in relationships is important for sexual satisfaction – we need to stop focusing on male orgasm only. Here’s the thing, men actually have higher sexual satisfaction knowing that they are giving their partner pleasure!

Issue 2: Single women are concerned to masturbate because of potential impacts on future relationships. Avoiding pleasure because your ‘potential’ future partner may or may not be able to generate the same amount of pleasure…

Resolution: Why avoid pleasure when something hasn’t even happened yet? Masturbating and then commencing a relationship is actually positive because you know what you like, and from the beginning you can feel confident to communicate to your new partner what you need. If they aren’t willing to listen or act accordingly then they aren’t the partner for you! You can’t put things off for “what ifs”.

Issue 3: Using sex toys in a relationship means there is a problem in the relationship. There is a perception that the male partner will respond negatively to the introduction of a toy because they will think they are inferior or incapable of providing pleasure themselves.

Resolution: Sex toys are great for mutual pleasure and can enhance the partnered sex without getting in the way if you are open to exploring. There are a myriad of couple toys that now exist which can enhance the couple experience. See the Dame Eva II, We-Vibe wearable vibrators, a Wartenberg Wheel, Handcuffs, Paddles…the list goes on!

Issue 4: Women in relationships who have issues with orgasm often report at the same time that they have problems with sexual communication, particularly around the need for clitoral stimulation.

Resolution: Take ownership and start communicating both verbally and physically! I’ll help you start, but you can also think about mutual masturbation sessions.

How to start a masturbation conversation in a relationship:

Make sure the environment and atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable before raising the discussion and be open to your partner having a different perspective to you.

Ask a general question about masturbation and your partner’s thoughts. This will give you valuable insight into their openness and approach to discussing the subject on a more personal level.

If you don’t want to ask outright about masturbation, use a conversation starter such as this article or a social media post about masturbation.

Tell your partner why you want to have a chat about masturbation – what is it that you want to get out of the conversation? E.g. acceptance that you practice it, acknowledgement that they practice it, exploration of mutual masturbation etc.

Remember to be completely honest in your beliefs AND your response to their perspective.

Before you settle in for winter hibernation, take charge of your pleasure and start your sexual satisfaction revolution!

Mama, if you want more ideas to improve your sexual satisfaction join the Mama’s Sensual Safari and ‘winter is coming’ will never sound the same again!

If your relationship satisfaction and intimacy have dropped then know you aren’t alone.

As I’m sitting here writing, Sydney is experiencing torrential rain and flooding. Lives temporarily or forever changed. Autumn is definitely here this week reminding us that change is inevitable. Some people start to swap their wardrobe from summer to winter clothes. Some decline invitations, preferring to stay cosy at home. A small few will even ponder their relationship before dismissing it because that change is too hard.

But should you regularly evaluate your relationship?…YES and changing seasons are a great reminder it’s time to explore!

A relationship is a constant balancing act between growth and stability/comfort.

Dr David Schnarch, reveals how these cycles interact:

Now not everything you do in your relationship is about growth. There are periods where you will move around the comfort circle and periods where you will roll around the growth circle. This is completely normal. I mean you don’t want to be constantly growing. It’s exhausting!

An example of this cycle is: Deciding to have children in your relationship (growth), then settling into your family life (comfort). The danger zone is becoming so focused on the children that your relationship becomes banal.

At the commencement of each season it’s time to remember the importance of your relationship, check in and grow.

But…why?

Role-modelling for children:

It’s research proven that poor relationship quality influences our children and family functioning. Children are more likely to have internalising problems at 2 years old if their parents experience low levels of relationship satisfaction and high levels of conflict.

Family stability and security:

Relationship problems impact our perception of our partner’s parental responsiveness and capabilities. The greater the relationship problems the less they thought their partner was responsive to the children. It’s important to perceive your partner’s parenting positively to create connected, stable, and secure family environments.

Partner connection:

When we get too comfortable in our relationship we can get bored, experience unresolved issues and become emotionally detached from our partner. Do you still even see them as a friend or ally?

Intimate connection:

Similarly, we can lose the intimate connection with our partner which leads to sexual boredom, low libido and the potential to seek sexual satisfaction via alternate methods.

It’s time to ask yourself:

When was the last time we grew as a couple?

Is our relationship monotonous, boring or fatigued?

Am I emotionally connected to my partner?

Do we communicate as lovers or best friends or as roommates or acquaintances?

If any of your answers put you in the comfort cycle and you have been there for a while now, let the autumn winds blow the cobwebs off and let’s spice up your relationship and boost intimacy!

4 ways to boost intimacy in your relationship

Revive what it was that first attracted you to your partner and what you loved about those initial courting days.

Talk to your partner and discuss how you can regularly ignite those feelings or scenarios?

Plan a sexy night together once a month

Too little or too often? Desire grows with consistency and it’s important to find a balance within the relationship. Want to do it more often…go ahead, but once a month is the minimum. Take turns deciding what this night will look like. By doing that, you are both comfortable with growth pace. It’s not a race!

Date day/night (separate to sexy night) once a month

This date won’t necessarily end with sexual activity. This is about building the relationship and bond between you. You can decide what you do together or you can alternate selecting what the date will be but DON’T do the same thing 2 months in a row. Spice it up and take a chance at something new.

Need help? The Adventure Challenge Couples Edition is great for unique date ideas you probably haven’t thought about! Click here to check it out OR use code AUTHENTIC to receive 10% off!

Focus on connecting when you can feel yourself drifting away. Feelings ebb and flow, it’s inevitable in stressful modern living. The key is how you respond. Notice when you are starting to detach and focus on re-connecting. There are 2 quick and easy ways to do this:

Hug It Out – Standing, put your arms around your partner and focus on yourself. Stay in your body and your own mind until you are fully relaxed. When you feel totally relaxed your partner can feel this energy and use your energy to help calm themselves. Let your partner know you fully relaxed by relaxing your shoulders down, or relaxing your hands a little as a non-verbal sign you are ready to end the hug.

Sit and Stare – Closely sit facing your partner and set a time for 2 minutes. Stare into each other’s eyes without touching until the timer goes off. Remember to not only have your eyes open but, lift the wall that might be blocking access to your inner soul. After the timer goes off embrace and discuss any emotions that arose for you during the time.

Growth doesn’t need to be scary. Small steps lead to long-term success and remember the seasonal reminder!

‘Guilt’, ‘obligation’, ‘duty’ all words used by women to describe their feelings towards sex and intimacy after birth. If they don’t whip you into a sexual frenzy then nothing will! Mamas reading this are going “mmm hmmm, no truer words have ever been spoken” or “OMG hide this blog from my partner so they don’t know the truth!”

But on the bright side not all women have negative sexual experiences and feelings in the first 12 months postpartum.

Around 80% of women report issues such as pain during intercourse, vaginal dryness and loss of libido in the first 3 months postpartum, which means 20% are living the dream!

The social construct we have created for mothers these days to “have it all” is just not attainable for the majority of women and forces poor mamas to put so much pressure on themselves to “have it all” that they usual just end up mentally and physically exhausted, and when it comes to sex they are partner-focused as opposed to pleasure focused.

Relationship changes (role changes, sex, intimacy) are significant challenges for women and their partners after childbirth. Research was conducted with a group of Melbourne mothers 3 years after the birth of their first child. The goal was to explore how women experienced and perceived changes to their sex life, sexuality and intimacy after birth.

So what insight did these mamas deign to share?

The most common reason for decreased frequency of sexual activity: extreme tiredness and exhaustion, especially in the early months.

How did they find lifestyle changes: dramatic and challenging. Most women spoke of lifestyle changes in terms of the losses they experienced since birth; loss of freedom, spontaneity, self-care time, time alone as a couple. There was also an increase in domestic responsibilities. Even those that pre-children had an equitable distribution of household duties found after children they tended to assume stereotypical roles, which the women resented.

What happened to their relationship intimacy: 3 different outcomes. Either intimacy and emotional connection decreased as a result of sexual problems, sex was used a tool to remain connected in the midst of change, or couples found new ways to express intimacy.

How did having children change their sexuality (the way you think or feel about yourself as a sexual being): negatively. Being a mother was described as “not sexy”. I mean what’s not sexy about having to take a moment to think about when you last showered…or even longer to remember when you last shaved your legs and washed your hair…What is interesting is that generally these mothers reported their partners didn’t see them any differently, it’s the way they see themselves that had changed.

How can you have a positive relationship and intimacy after birth?

Talk, talk and talk some more. Communication, particularly in the early postpartum months, is key to getting through and setting up responsibilities, expectations and priorities.

Schedule self-care time each week. You can’t be intimate with someone if you don’t feel sexy in yourself, and one step towards feeling sexy is feeling like yourself again. Maybe it’s feeling like who you were pre-children or maybe it’s feeling like a new and improved you. It doesn’t matter as long as you feel happy and confident in yourself.

Spend time alone together with your partner. Schedule in regular date time, or if childcare is an issue, schedule a regular home date night. No one said dates need to be expensive or outside the home. Spend time together doing whatever it is you enjoy together. The expectation that this is the night for just you as a couple is often exciting! It also allows you to prioritise sleep vs intimacy (a big competition for mamas).

Stop trying to be everything for everyone and stop trying to live up to socially constructed images. We forget that media and social media posts are only a snapshot of a moment in time and behind it is likely hours of setup and perfecting. Life is not about time to setup and perfect, life is about all the moments with your loved ones and you are missing them if you are trying to “have it all”.

Only you can remove self-imposed pressures, and once you do you feel an enormous amount of freedom!
